Open University claims 20 million iTunes download record

The Open University (OU) is claiming it’s the first university to hit the figure of 20 million downloaded tracks on iTunes U.

iTunes U is the educational section of Apple’s online store, and it’s an area that the OU is dominating in, according to its own figures.

These show that since the OU began putting material up on iTunes U in June 2008, the organisation has distributed 20 million learning-based tracks. The last few months has seen the average amount of downloads increase to 250,000 per week.

Martin Bean, Vice-Chancellor of The Open University, said: “I am delighted that the popularity of The Open University on iTunes U continues to go from strength to strength.”

“Our success lies in providing original, custom-built content for iTunes U, linked to current and popular OU courses. Students are able to incorporate tracks into their studies, while informal learners anywhere in the world can tap into these excellent materials for free.”

Apparently, more than 4.5 million downloads in the past year – that’s 28% of the total number – are accounted for by STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects.

However, the most downloaded track has been beginner’s French. There’s no mention of the subject we studied at university: Beer.
