Switzerland’s Cablecom shows US Masters in 3D

Website: Rapid TV News

Cablecom has become the first cable company in Switzerland to transmit a 3D TV broadcast as part of a test run.

The final of the US Masters golf tournament was transmitted live in 3D from Augusta on April 11 for a small, hand-picked audience at its headquarters in Zurich equipped with 3D TV sets and glasses.

For its 3D trial, the subsidiary of US media concern Liberty Global closely collaborated with sister company UPC Nederland and technical service provider DMC.

“I am convinced that 3D television will be part of our everyday lives in the near future,” said Cablecom’s managing director Eric Tveter.

“The technical capabilities of our Fiber Power cable network of the latest generation will allow us to offer this unique new television experience to our customers soon.”

Cablecom, which works closely together with Liberty Global on 3D, says it is currently in a test phase and in discussion with various content providers. When the first regular 3D programmes will be broadcast is not yet known.

Switzerland’s Cablecom to adopt UPC brand

Website: Rapid TV News

Switzerland’s largest cable operator Cablecom will adopt the UPC brand on 1 April.

The new logo will be used in parallel with the current brand to ensure a smooth transition for the customers, the company said in Zurich.

The new logo combination will be used for the first time in advertisements for the new broadband tariffs launched on 1 April which offer a data rate of up to 100 Mbit/s.

Cablecom announced in autumn 2009 to rename the company into UPC in 2010, thereby taking on the umbrella brand of the European cable assets of US-based parent company Liberty Global which acquired Cablecom in 2005.

In neighbouring Germany, Liberty Global recently took over the country’s second largest cable operator Unitymedia, leading to speculation that the UPC brand could be introduced in Germany as well soon.

Liberty Global has not yet commented on the issue.
