Having problems getting a computer I bought from http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk repaired under guaranty. Took it in on 21 March over a month later and 7 phone calls I still have no guaranty of its return. The latest is that it is beyond economic repair (the hard drive failed) and they will replace the PC, but no guarantied date yet, always tomorrow each time I call. This Box was our test server for our http://visionon.tv project and we need it back, or to buy a replacement, but hard to do that when Morgan’s keeps fairy tailing about a replacement tomorrow. Be wary about buying from http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk seams to be the moral of the story – will update with outcome hopefully soon.

Thought for the day

Our project is basically about technological standards – It isn’t about what people do with these standards – the standards them selves lean in the direction we politically desire inherently.

And these technological standards will not be brought about by technology, but the social use of technology, so we are creating a community of people around these standards – and it is this community that will create the technological standard. The technology by it self is powerless and will wither with out being embraced by an active and affective community.

So to repeat it is a technological project, which can only come out of a community project. If we treat it as only one of these (as people commonly do, then neither will work).

Another good post from http://techdirt.com they do good coverage of transition to new media world-death of old.

“Rather than simply wringing his hands about how the decline of the newspaper means that no one will report local news, Reason’s Jesse Walker actually gives some thought to where local news coverage might come from in a post-newspaper world.” http://techdirt.com/articles/20090319/2046544191.shtml

And blackberry is bringing out exactly the type of TV service we are offering, but on a mobile phone – its “stupidly simple” so should work fine if they can access the content.

“By downloading content in the background over Wi-Fi, RIM would avoid clogging 3G networks. Downloaded programs would be ready to play when users want to watch them on the go. And once 3G networks finally get up to speed, customers may just want to upgrade.”
