The revolution that is Project Canvas

At the moment Project Canvas is still a work in progress.

The basics are already known and the concept is to renew the current free-to-view digital television service in a form that can be viewed online.

The details of this service will be launched by the end of the month, but the best way of looking at it is to compare it with the BBC iPlayer; when this was launched who could have predicted the following that this service would have.

For Project Canvas the market is already there, waiting for the next evolution in digital television and it would seem that this could be that next step that sees catch-up TV enter the mainstream, allowing viewers to experience a new way of watching television.

Project Canvas will be free

As the multi-channel internet-based TV service known as Project Canvas begins to make launch plans, already there is speculation on how this is going to work for the consumer.

It seems that TalkTalk has the answer and it comes in the form of a bundled deal.

Consumers taking out a broadband and phone service bundle will be able to get a Project Canvas set top box free of charge.

However, if the consumer is happy with their ISP and phone service provider then the equipment could carry a price tag of around £200.

With the BBC, BT, Arqiva, TalkTalk, Channel Four, ITV and Five being partners in the project, it would appear that there is plenty of scope for all sorts of offers designed to encourage the consumer to sign up to Project Canvas.

Will Virgin Media sign up to Project Canvas?

Now that the BBC Trust has given Project Canvas the go ahead, there is little that can stop it from going live on the internet and even an appeal from BSkyB or Virgin Media may not have the desired effect.

However, Virgin Media has been taking a different stance to the online TV service, in fact there have even been hints that the cable TV provider may be giving up on the appeal in order to join Project Canvas as one of the partners.

This could be because Virgin Media no longer makes TV programming.

Virgin Media TV has been sold to BSkyB, so now Virgin Media is in the content delivery business and that makes all the difference when it comes to Project Canvas.

Project Canvas gets BBC Trust approval

The BBC Trust has finally given the thumbs up to the scheme to offer Freeview and Freesat digital television online.

Towards the end of the 2009, the BBC Trust gave provisional approval and despite complaints from the digital pay TV providers, BSkyB and Virgin Media, Project Canvas is now a go and the wheels will begin to turn.

The on demand service has the provisional name of YouView, which is a combo of Freeview and YouTube.

The main issue for the scheme now is that it has twenty days to publish its initial technical specifications.

The final specifications must be published eight months before the launch of any equipment such as set top boxes or tuners that are built into new televisions.

BBC Trust Approves Project Canvas, Sets Conditions

The British Broadcasting Corp.’s controlling trust Friday approved Project Canvas, a joint venture Web-television service that will bring Internet content and new video-on-demand to the TV early next year.

But the approval, which was widely expected, was subject to conditions including free-to-air access for users, access to the platform for content providers and Internet Service Providers, as well as industry consultation.

BBC Trust also said the BBC’s involvement will not exceed its estimated costs by more than 20% over a five year period, and that Project Canvas “will comply with all applicable laws including competition and state aid law.”
