The internet is suffering from a real problem with power supply. This is twofold. First of all, the availability of power (and especially redundant power) is becoming more expensive and more inconsistent; secondly is the problem of the heat caused by powering internet servers.
So what are the answers?
Well, our, military submarines have their own nuclear power plants – so, why can’t data centres be powered in a similar way. Not the large, three mile island type affair, just a small local plant that will run forever without draining the local grid ?
At a local level, Flash storage provides a real alternative to traditional hard drives that reduce power usage phenomenally (and moving parts); as the costs of this technology decline it will surely replace traditional HDDs.
So, there you go, what the world need now is a nuclear sub full of Flash drives with a good WiMax signal….
