TalkTalk to fight the Digital Bill

Following the ultra quick work of the government to slip the Digital Economy Bill though Parliament without anyone really checking it out, it looks as if some broadband account holders will be seeing their broadband services removed due to excessive illegal downloading.

One internet service provider (ISP) has stated that it will protect its customers’ identities unless they are demanded through the courts.

TalkTalk has been opposing the bill since it was first suggested, not that it supports illegal downloading, but the company apparently believes that the digital economy bill is wrong because it places the responsibility onto consumers to prove that they are innocent, rather than the other way around.

According to TalkTalk, it is the only ISP to come out and state that it will not disclose its customers’ details.

STBs to get Silverlight

Microsoft has been trying to get its Flash rival Silverlight into the media, but a move to get the product into set-top-boxes could mean that Microsoft will be entering into the world of media sooner than expected.

Silverlight can run on low power processors.

These could be like the ones used in set-top-boxes to provider content with digital rights management (DRM) to the consumer’s television.

It is believed that once Silverlight is established in the set-top-box market, there is no reason why this technology cannot move platforms and appear in computers and smartphones.

After all, the end user only wants the technology to provide the service.

Where it comes from is irrelevant to them.

ADMC and Humax sign deal with EPL

The Korean based technology company, Humax, has signed a deal with the Abu Dhabi Media Company (ADMC) to build and supply high definition set top boxes, to show live football from the English Premier League (EPL) to consumers around the Middle East and across North Africa.

It was during 2009 that ADMC signed a deal with the EPL to show live matches for the next three seasons, starting with the new season in August.

The ADMC will not just be relying on the set top box to provide these services, as there are plans to off footballs fans the chance to catch their favourite EPL team in action through HD TV, IPTV and through video streaming over a broadband connection.

Warhammer Online players overcharged on subs

Some Warhammer Online players have been hit by a substantial billing error.

The online role-playing game, which charges a monthly fee, took multiple instalments from some players’ bank accounts.

The Warhammer Online forum is filled with a number of complaints. For example: “My account I pay my sub from was billed today for over 500 dollars in 16 dollar increments. The account was overdrawn and with fees and over-billing it was 562.73 total.”

One person was billed for over $1000, and of course accounts that go overdrawn will doubtless be subject to further charges from the bank.

Developer Mythic has responded and apologised for the erroneous billing, and said: “As of now we have received confirmation that the charges have been reversed.”

“Depending on your financial institution and when they deposit the refunded charges back to your account it may take up to 3 business days for this refund to be reflected in your statement.”

The company also says that it “anticipates” any fees charged due to accounts becoming overdrawn will be refunded, as well.

Palm up for sale?

Troubled smartphone manufacturer Palm is looking for a buyer, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Apparently the company is working with Goldman Sachs to find a willing purchaser, with a target date for the bidding to start as early as this week, according to sources Bloomberg spoke to.

It will come as no surprise to most, seeing as Palm has had a rough ride lately, with its Pre smartphone failing to make the impact the company anticipated.

Not just the iPhone, but the success of Android has removed much of the wind from the Pre’s sales.

The California based company recently announced substantial third quarter losses of $22 million net.

It only shifted two-thirds of the numbers of smartphones analysts predicted it would sell in that period, and the company’s share price has halved since the beginning of the year.

Because of that, Palm represents a possible turn-around bargain, if the right buyer can be found.

An article in the Telegraph claims that HTC and Lenovo have both reportedly already made offers for Palm.

Nothing has been officially announced as yet, however, regarding offers or indeed the sale.
