Half of Brits are mobile phone addicts

In a not-really-all-that-surprising set of survey results, Birmingham Midshire Savings has discovered that 51% of Brits never leave home without their mobile.

And the BM Savings research also indicated that 44% of folks said they couldn’t live without their mobile phone, they were that addicted to it.

The survey, which was highlighted by The Mail Online, also revealed that 75% of respondents spend up to half an hour on the blower every day. Younger people were predictably more fanatical about using their mobiles, with almost 90% spending up to an hour a day.

Being a bank commissioned survey, the questions also dipped into the topic of finances. Just over half those questioned said telephone banking was the most convenient method of managing their wealth (or lack of it). 6 out of 10 people felt that the best savings rates were only available online.

UK surfers don’t want to pay for online content

A recent survey by financial services provider KPMG has discovered one clear fact: British people don’t want to fork out money for online content.

Or at least, UK citizens are much less likely to want to pay for the privilege of visiting a site than people of other nationalities.

The Independent reports that 81% of Brits surveyed said they would go elsewhere if a free site they used regularly suddenly started charging.

A statistic that Rupert Murdoch has experienced first-hand, with the recently paywalled Times website. Last week, fellow newspaper The Guardian report that the online Times has seen a drop of two-thirds in its readership post paywall – and that’s with an introductory offer in place.

It’s a very different story in Asia, where 59% would be happy enough to pay to keep using a site they visited frequently. Worldwide, the average figure was 43%, more than double the 19% who would be okay with a paywall in this country.

75% of UK web browsers said they would prefer to experience online advertising to subsidise costs or keep access to a site free. Almost 50% would allow profile tracking in the same vein, despite privacy concerns.

It seems there’s no such thing as a paid lunch on the web, at least not in the UK, and we wonder how long it will take The Times to discover the likely hard reality of this fact.

Online privacy rules introduced

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has now launched a new set of guidelines designed to protect the personal information that all internet users and organisations store online.

The Personal Information Online Code of Practice informs organisations that store data online, how they are able to use this data and that there is a need for transparency in the way they are operating.

There are many issues at stake, such as the misleading of customers, what information can be stored and what the ICO is able to do should an organisation fail to work within the new rules and regulations.

Basically, data has to be up to date, secure, not kept for any longer than necessary and not transferred without proper security measures being in place.

Proms archive live on BBC Online

The Proms at the Royal Albert Hall has been a long standing event on the BBC and fans of this exciting yet typically British music extravaganza can catch up on the 115 year history of the Proms by visiting the BBC website.

The Proms has been going since 1895 and in that time 7,168 concerts have taken place.

Details of these concerts can be found on the searchable online BBC database that has taken two year to complete.

The database lists all of the composers, conductors, ensembles, performances and soloists that have taken part in this event during the past 115 years, which is a challenge considering the changes that have taken place in language and the way material is recorded over the years.

The BBC Proms 2010 opens at the Royal Albert Hall on the 16th July.
