Bronze Medal

The Olympics are a curse in disguise. For a country gripped in recession the £10bn bill now seem steep (especially for a small country of 60m people).

But this is a city which has had two giant state of the art stadia (Wembley and the Emirates Stadium) built within the past two years within a few miles of the proposed Olympics campus which will only play a marginal part in the games. A new almost-billion pound stadium, which will largely be torn down after the event, is the centerpiece of this utterly mad venture.
Of course, building these castles in the sky that will hardly ever be used again is a wonderful aspiration, but utterly stupid in today’s world. The IOC should be ashamed of the environmental and social impact of the ‘successful’ Beijing Olympics. It represented wasteful capitalism at its absolute worst. To persevere in its monumentalism for London makes the members of the IoC criminal, especially, since they neglect what they should be focused on – the availability of the Games on new media.
And so, I have to ask, what will be invested in making the games available, not to those who can afford the £50 entry prices to Greco-Roman wrestling, but to the rest of us, anywhere in the world, who want to watch and access ‘our’ sport.
An investment of a total fraction of the cost of one of the twenty five or so venues being developed would pay for everyone on earth to see every minute of every event.
Can I suggest, in these arctic times, that this might be money better spent ?

DIRECTV and TANDBERG Television Continue HDTV Relationship

Save $23/mo. for a full year. Get DIRECTV.

DIRECTV
has
selected the latest TANDBERG MPEG-4
AVC HD encoding solutions for its local HD channel expansion. The move builds on a
pioneering HDTV relationship between DIRECTV and TANDBERG Television and further extends
both companies’ HDTV market lead. In early 2005 DIRECTV chose TANDBERG Television’s
first-to-market MPEG-4 AVC HD platform, and became the first North American satellite
DTH provider to launch HD services.

The solution chosen by DIRECTV includes the newly released EN8095 encoders, part of
the EN8090 MPEG-4 AVC SD/HD encoding family. New features within the EN8095 include
IP statistical multiplexing, 8VSB input and control of up to three different outputs
(MPEG-4 AVC HD/SD and MPEG-2 SD). The encoders provide more bandwidth efficiency,
the ability to capture and rebroadcast terrestrial HD channels and allow DIRECTV the
ability to leverage existing operational efficiencies as well as support future requirements.

EN8090 encoders enable operators to deliver HD and SD multi-channel and single channel
MPEG-4 AVC services across cable, satellite, telco and terrestrial networks. The TANDBERG
encoders use a comprehensive tool-set of advanced compression video processing features,
combined with new pre-processing techniques. The EN8090 encoding family pushes encoding
efficiency to the highest levels of excellence, providing the ultimate in best quality
pictures at the lowest bit rates. Advanced audio coding options provide equally impressive
low bit rate audio performance.

DIRECTV utilizes several other systems by TANDBERG Television including the WatchPoint
Workflow System and Xport Producer content production solution.
