More Merger Mania

Consolidation continues in the internet TV market as Jump TV arranges to acquire IPTV platform company NeuLion. After Jump TV’s acquisition of Cycling TV, I had an inkling that Jump TV and Narrowstep, who provide Cycling’s platform, would merge, but following a STB strategy makes some sense for Jump TV, who have clearly found their internet TV subscription model difficult to monetize – offering a STB tends to tie in viewers more and is perceived to carry greater value.

There is also the potential to widen Jump’s sports portfolio through NeuLion’s relationship with organisations such as the NHL.

Good Vibrations

So, let me take a step back from the carnage applied to Narrowstep (NRWS.OB) by ‘Interim CEO’ David McCourt and his ‘team’ (over 80c to 6c share price since he took over) and examine why the recently announced sale of the company might be a very, very good thing for OnStream (ONSM):

1) OnStream has no platform, so they can sell a recurring revenue product
2) No European presence means opening up a vast new market
3) The Narrowstep reseller network is highly successful in countries such as Spain and Germany
4) Inheriting the Narrowstep CDN should mean considerable savings on serving – Narrowstep is the cheapest CDN out there
5) The corporate market, where OnStream is strong, is one I have long argued that Narrowstep should target

So, a great buy for Onstream and a dreadful deal for Narrowstep shareholders, who have superior technology and infrastructure, and potential dominance in a whole continent – and used to have the best staff until McCourt sacked them all and sent them to competing firms.

I just hope this post serves as useful information to anyone else who thinks of dealing with David McCourt and Granahan McCourt, no matter how desperate they are.
