Most of London will have fibre by next year

London looks set to benefit from BT’s roll out of next generation fibre technology a lot sooner than first anticipated.

BT’s commitment was to cover most of London by the time the Olympics start, however according to BT, it will be adding 114 exchanges to the fibre network, meaning the capital will be getting 87 per cent coverage by this time next year!

This of course does not help the rest of the UK, especially those areas where there is no broadband available, but London has the highest concentration of consumers.

The current UK plans are to cover two thirds of the country with fibre by 2015, but if the same pattern follows, it will mean that those areas already getting up-to-20 Mbps will be getting the fibre upgrade first.

BT London exchange almost recovered from flood

BT has said that it has cleaned up and is in the process of getting everything going in the Paddington exchange which was hit by both fire and a flood on Wednesday.

The landlines and broadband of tens of thousands of customers which were affected, particularly in the north and west of London, are now being brought steadily back into operation.

The Telegraph reports that BT say work will progress throughout the day, so if your service has been taken out by the incident, hopefully it will be restored at some point today.

However, no guarantees have been given regarding exactly when people are going to be getting back online.

The BBC says that an electrical fault caused the flood and the fire. Although quite how an electrical fault can cause a flood, in room-fulls of expensive electronic equipment where sprinklers presumably aren’t used, we’re not quite sure.

NDS plans 2012 London float

Website: Rapid TV News
It is no great surprise to hear that NDS will seek a fresh stock market listing, but CEO Abe Peled has confirmed that the company has 2012 in mind for a float, and might have a secondary listing in China.

NDS was first publicly quoted on the NASDAQ back in 1999 but when private equity firm Permira bought 51% of the company, valuing the conditional access and TV technology company at about $3.6bn, NDS delisted.

News Corporation holds the 49% balance although prior to the Permira deal it held 72% of the company’s equity and 96% of its voting shares.

Technicolor ready to offer Broadcast 3D

Website: Rapid TV News

Technicolor’s Chiswick, West London, play-out facility can now handle 3D material, a ‘first’ claims the company.

Technicolor says it has developed its Broadcast 3D service offering to ensure optimal viewing and distribution technologies are being used.

The company is now ready to offer this service to its cable, television, and satellite network service provider clients.

“With the availability of 3D televisions, we are very excited to be the first to offer this new Broadcast 3D service to our customers,” commented Chuck Parker, president of Technicolor’s Digital Content Delivery business.

“Broadcast 3D is a natural extension of the many services we’re already providing, including upstream in production and post production, as well as delivering the highest quality 3D images to theatres and to the home via Blu-ray Disc, broadcast, and digital delivery.”

Technicolor says it is able to manage live or pre-recorded content, from post production through encoding for satellite, cable, IPTV or terrestrial distribution.

The company is also able to generate logos and other visual effects for 3D broadcasts.

The Broadcast 3D transmission suite at Technicolor’s Chiswick Park offices features equipment from Sensio, Orad and Miranda.
