London Underground feed buckles under excessive demand

Transport for London gave app developers access to data regarding underground train schedules last month.

But it seems that the unexpected level of demand from apps using the departure times to keep commuters informed on the progress of trains put a massive strain on Transport for London’s servers, and the organisation has had to halt the feed.

ZD Net UK pointed to a post on the London Datastore blog, which explained that “overwhelming demand by apps” meant the service has been temporarily suspended.

The blog further explains: “We hope to restore the service as soon as possible but this may take some days. We will keep everyone informed of progress towards a resolution.”

So if you’ve been wondering why your Underground train times app hasn’t been working, there’s your answer. It’s encouraging that “days” are mentioned as the solution time-frame, as opposed to weeks.

Not that you have to wait that long for another tube train in most instances, if you’ve just missed one. Unlike buses, they don’t tend to have a habit of going mysteriously missing.

Met Police arrest two London teens over cyber-crime

The Metropolitan Police has arrested a pair of London teenagers who are suspected of being involved in an extensive cyber-crime ring.

Aged seventeen and eighteen, the two are allegedly part of an operation which has netted literally thousands of credit card details.

The online crime forum, believed to be the biggest English speaking international forum, witnessed members trading stolen credit card details and personal information.

The police say that their investigation into the forum has unearthed some 65,000 stolen credit card details alone. The 8,000 member forum also contained instructions on how to commit various acts of cyber-crime.

The teenagers were being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud and contravening the Computer Misuse Act. They have now been released on bail, and will be under further investigation, according to an IT Pro report.
