DTT radio falls flat in Germany

Website: Rapid TV News

The local media authority of German federal states Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, MA HSH, has unsuccessfully ended its tender to allocate DTT capacity to radio stations. The interest from radio broadcasters was very low, so it was decided not proceed with the allocation, the media authority said in a statement.

Instead, a new tender was opened to grant the capacity to a TV channel with interested parties invited to submit their applications before March 19. “The response to our tenders of DTT frequencies is clear: There is very strong demand for the distribution of TV channels, but there seems to be little additional value for the radio industry,” said MA HSH director Thomas Fuchs.

The capacity in the DTT packages in the cities of Hamburg, Lübeck and Kiel, which would have offered space for 16 digital radio stations, was tendered by MA HSH in December 2009. After Berlin and Leipzig, Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein would have been the third German region with DTT radio. In all other areas, the line-up only includes TV channels.

German
payTV operator Sky has selected Pace HD
technology for its set-top box deployments in Germany and Austria. This deployment
of Pace set-top boxes, rolling out from August 2009, will support Sky’s HD expansion
plans across its territories.

Pace has been a set-top box technology partner of Sky, formerly Premiere, for a number
of years and the new DS830 gives Sky the full flexibility to roll-out HD services
with support for both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.

Designed by the Pace Industrial Design team to reflect today’s trends in consumer
electronics equipment, the DS830 was built to meet Sky’s requirements and to deliver
maximum functionality.

At the front-end, the fully DVB compliant DS830NP includes one DVB-S2 tuner and one
demodulator. It incorporates NDS conditional access and Fusion middleware and has
an external power supply unit to reduce box size. It also meets the criteria outlined
in Pace’s own low environmental impact initiative.
