Solaris Mobile to expand in Europe

Website: Rapid TV News

Dublin-based Solaris Mobile yesterday made a presentation to France’s Mobile TV Forum.

Solaris Mobile wants to see its S-Band satellite technology used to transmit video and audio channels, as well as telematics services, to vehicles and hand-held smart phones and similar devices across Europe.

At present, Solaris Mobile is carrying out trials in Paris, demonstrating the broadcast of TV, radio and data services to phones, other handheld devices and cars – across the city and surrounding areas which represents what the future commercial service would look like.

Solaris Mobile, owned by SES Astra and Eutelsat, is the only company currently to have an operational satellite within the S-Band spectrum, allocated under a process managed by the European Commission, across Europe, making them the first company to be able to offer a service of this kind.

Steve Maine, CEO, Solaris Mobile, said: “Solaris Mobile is delighted to be presenting its plans for commercial content distribution within the French market, by utilising the company’s unique technology and broadcasting capabilities.

“Whilst the service is initially only available within France, we hope that in the near future many more European cities will also benefit.”

Lords say Europe unprepared for cyber-war

A recent report from the House of Lords has suggested that European cyber-defences are in dire need of strengthening.

Future conflicts won’t just be conventional, as cyber-attacks are likely to be a more commonplace form of terrorism or action against a country.

And because of the way the Internet is interlinked across borders, countries with weaker online security are going to have an effect on other European nations if they are comprised.

While the UK might have fairly robust online defences, the likes of Estonia, which a couple of years ago fell victim to an attack which took its online banking system down, aren’t so clever in the cyber-security stakes.

In fact, the report ranked the UK near the top of European countries when it came to online defence.

But the Lords committee stressed that each country was only as strong as the weakest link, and the UK would benefit from bringing other struggling nations up to its security levels.

Currently, the level of co-operation between not just EU nations, but also NATO is poor, and the report stressed that this situation needed to be remedied on a global level.

SES Astra reports strong growth for satellite in Europe

Website: Rapid TV News

SES Astra’s latest numbers show the strength of satellite in Europe grows and grows, with satellite homes overtaking cable homes for the first time ever.

Yesterday a UK terrestrial network (Ch 5) decided to place its HDTV eggs firmly onto the satellite market, having not been able to secure ‘terrestrial’ distribution.

Ch 5 becomes BSkyB’s 42nd HDTV channel.

The move isn’t surprising given the instant audience satellite delivers.

The satellite story, as far as SES Astra is concerned, is more than spectacular.

SES says they have added 3m new satellite homes in Europe over this past year, and that the number of European satellite homes now exceeds that of cable.

Moreover, satellite is now almost totally a digital audience, while cable lags behind with barely one third of homes viewing digital channels.

SES Astra is now broadcasting to 125 million TV homes across Europe and North Africa, 3 million more than the year before.

For the first time, satellite reaches more households than cable in Europe, with 77 million satellite and 71 million cable households.

Terrestrial infrastructures reach 86.5 million households; however, not even half of them (48%) are digital.

The digitalisation rate of satellite increased to 92%, with a total of 71 million out of the 77 million satellite households being digital.

Cable still shows the lowest digitalisation rate, with one third or 34% (24 million) of all 71 million cable households being digital.

IPTV is 100% digitised and reaches 9 million households across Europe.

In high definition, Astra counts around 6 million HD viewing homes and currently broadcasts 114 HD channels.

The success of HD is underpinned by the high number of HD screens sold across Europe.

125 million HD Ready TV sets have been sold since the start of HD in 2005.

It is expected that by 2013, an estimated 55 million households will be equipped with both an HD Ready TV set and a suitable HD receiver.

Satellite is expected to remain the largest distribution platform for HD.

“The significant increase in reach and the success of SES Astra are based on a stable business model and on strong drivers which allow us to develop our business despite the difficult market situation,” says Ferdinand Kayser, President/CEO SES Astra.

“The underlying dynamics of Western European key markets, and the growth in Eastern Europe, impressively demonstrate that we are able to maintain our competitive position and further develop our reach, in technical and commercial terms.

“Whether in HD, hybrid reception or 3D TV, we are extremely well positioned to play a leading role in future innovations.”

Astra’s highlights:

  • Total of 244 million analogue and digital TV homes in Europe
  • Astra fleet reaches 125 million analogue and digital TV households in Europe and North Africa (57 million Direct-to-Home, 68 million through cable head-ends)
  • Around 60% or 146 million TV homes receive programs digitally (includes all reception modes: satellite, cable, terrestrial, IPTV)
  • Satellite serves every second digital TV household and reaches 71 million digital homes (49% of the digital market); cable reaches 24 million digital homes (16%), terrestrial reaches 41.7 million digital homes (29%), IPTV reaches nine million homes (6%).
  • Astra serves 52 million digital satellite homes (72% of all digital satellite homes)
  • Astra currently features 114 HD channels and reaches around 6 million HD viewing homes
  • Digitalisation rate of satellite is 9%, compared to 48% for terrestrial reception and 34% for cable networks

Fuel TV to come to Europe

Website: Rapid TV News

US-based television operator Fox Cable Networks has made its sports and lifestyle channel Fuel TV available to digital platform operators in Europe. Germany is the first international market entered by the channel with Eutelsat’s direct-to-cable platform KabelKiosk offering Fuel TV to its local distribution partners.

The new addition forms part of KabelKiosk’s FamilyXL package which now numbers 34 channels. Subscribers can receive the service at no additional charge.

With action sports such as skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding and freestyle motocross, Fuel TV targets a young audience. The channel launched in July 2003 in the USA where it now reaches more than 30 million households. Platform operators in Europe can access the signal through Eutelsat’s Eurobird 9A satellite at 9° East which is used by KabelKiosk for its cable head-end feeds.

“We are excited that Fuel TV has chosen the leading digital channel platform KabelKiosk for its debut in Germany,” Martina Rutenbeck, managing director of Eutelsat visAvision, said in Cologne. “The continuous expansion of our FamilyXL package brings diversity to digital cable networks. KabelKiosk thereby provides a great contribution to accelerate the mainly content-driven digitalisation of cable networks.”
