BlackBerry Pearl 3G now on T-Mobile and Vodafone

You can now grab the BlackBerry Pearl 3G on both T-Mobile and Vodafone networks in the UK.

And both are offering the handset for free if you’re prepared to sign up to a £25 per month contract for two years.

On that deal, Vodafone is offering 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of Internet. T-Mobile is offering 300 minutes, 300 texts and unlimited Internet (subject to fair use policy).

If you can live without the Internet usage on T-Mobile, you can pick up the handset for free on a £20 per month contract with 300 minutes and 300 texts (again, that’s a two year deal).

The BlackBerry Pearl is a very compact candy bar phone with a 12 digit keypad, 3.2 megapixel camera, wi-fi, 3G and built-in GPS.

BlackBerry OS 6 gets another video preview

Rim has posted up another sneak peek at BlackBerry 6, the up and coming new version of its smartphone operating system.

The video on the official BlackBerry blog (see it here) shows the new more “visual and fluid” interface at work, complete with multi-touch and kinetic scrolling.

The new WebKit powered browser features tabs and pinch-to-zoom, and new applications such as Social Feeds integrate your social networks into one hub. It’s possible to post to multiple social networking accounts simultaneously using OS 6.

Not everyone is pleased, though – one commenter laments that the interface looks “soooo 5 years ago”.

As the video says, BlackBerry 6 is coming soon, and should arrive later this summer, although an exact time-frame is still yet to be clarified.

The rest is here:

BlackBerry tablet to include dual cameras?

More tablet talk has leaked out today, this time about the rumoured up and coming BlackBerry device from Rim.

CNet reports that Ashok Kumar, a research analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, has spoken out about the BlackBerry tablet, which according to him will boast a 7 inch display, a 1GHz processor, and twin cameras.

The dual cameras will be situated on the back and front for video conferencing duties, and Rim’s effort will be more aimed at the business market, as opposed to the consumer territory the iPad has already taken a large chunk out of sales-wise.

Kumar reckons that Rim has brought the launch date of the device forward, so that it may appear before the end of the year.

The usual concluding paragraph applies – all this is purely speculation. Rim has thus far refused to engage the rumour with any comment.

KCOM back in the black

The broadband and phone service provider KCOM, who were formally known as Kingston Communications, have made a return to profits following large losses in the previous year.

The company reports a pre tax profit £19.2 million for the year ending in March, the previous year’s results showed a loss of £111 million.

According to the executive Chairman Bill Halbert, KCOM are now benefiting from a wider strategy and working on business that returns a higher margin.

It seems that the company are slightly down in terms of revenues, but clearly, the cost cutting exercise carried out during restructuring has made a big difference to the company’s finances.

Currently KCOM are investing in rebranding the business that provides telecoms in Hull, and is also making plans to expand the service to outlying villages.

Rim launches new BlackBerry phones

Rim has announced two new smartphones in its Blackberry line for the UK market – the Pearl 3G 9105 and the Bold 9650.

The Pearl 9105 is interesting in terms of its design, as it carries a standard numeric keypad, not a Qwerty or SureType effort. It’s the first ever BlackBerry to take this step.

Presumably this is in an effort to appeal to a broader range of consumers who are used to these keypads.

The 9105 has a pretty chunky spec, with a 624MHz processor, 3.2 megapixel camera, 256MB of flash memory, GPS, wi-fi, optical trackpad, and a high resolution 360 x 400 pixel display. It will also be a compact little handset.

The BlackBerry Bold 9650 does have a Qwerty keyboard, and is more aimed at the business market.

It will come with a 2.4 inch display, 3.2 megapixel camera, optical trackpad, wi-fi, and 512MB of flash memory expandable up to 32GB.

“The BlackBerry Bold 9650 fuses form and function in a striking design and, in addition to providing premium phone and multimedia features, it of course delivers the industry’s leading mobile solution for email, messaging and social networking,” Rim commented.

Expect these handsets to go on sale later this year, although they’re set to launch with OS 5.0, not the up and coming OS 6.0.
