The Beeb to charge for web TV?

It seems that the government has turned its attention to the folks who have taken to watching TV on their computer to avoid paying for a TV licence.

Currently, if you watch live simultaneously broadcast programmes on your computer, you need a TV licence.

However, those who watch the Beeb’s iPlayer catch-up TV service aren’t required to stump up the licence fee – although it seems that may be about to change to some extent.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt told the Andrew Marr Show that times and technology are changing swiftly, but he rejected the idea of a PC based licence fee. He did, however, say that an assessment of the situation was necessary.

Apparently Hunt will be talking to Auntie Beeb about what sort of payment model they could possibly employ for online viewers, with The Daily Mirror mentioning the idea of a pay-per-view scheme.

BBC happy for NAO to audit

A lot has come out since the review of the BBC and it seems that the corporation has learned from the errors that is has made.

The key to the survival of the BBC comes down to just one thing, money!

The BBC is funded through the TV Licence fee, which is effectively a TV Tax and these days taxpayers want their money’s worth.

According to the BBC Trust, it is willing to allow the National Audit Office (NAO) regular access to the accounts of the corporation in order to offer greater transparency, something that seems to have been missing in the past.

The changes go even further, with one of the BBC Trustees, Jeremy Peat, stating that the BBC needs an auditor.

There is no reason why the NAO could not take on such a role.

Record figures for the iPlayer

Once again the BBC iPlayer has been setting the pace for all catch-up and on-demand TV services, with an amazing 116.4 million requests for digital TV and radio services through the platform.

It is not a record breaking month, as January set the record with a staggering 120.3 million requests, but then again February is a shorter month with just twenty eight days to play with.

According to the BBC, it was the live edition of the soap Eastenders which helped the iPlayer during February.

In fact during that particular week there were 18.9 million requests made through the iPlayer service.

Requests from the Apple iPhone accounted for around four per cent of all usage.

The Nintendo Wii had a record making month too, with requests lifting from one per cent to four per cent.
