The ENC-300 is a hardware encoder blade built for 24/7 streaming and real time encoding. The H264 HD encoder series supports input of DVI signals up to 1920×1200, HDMI or HD-SDI. Additionally the ENC-300 supports RGB, analogue Components and Composite, for those applications where many different signals are found and the encoder inputs need to be switched.

The ENC-300 uses only 9W power to encode video and audio signals. Making it ideal not only for fixed installations but also for mobile 4G sports, broadcast contribution and news gathering, since the HD encoder can be powered by a battery.

Turnfront is organising a conference on using the web for activism on 7th August in London.

It will have a mixture of presentations from activists and technologists, along with time for more open conversations between the participants. The talks will cover activist video, open source social media, hi-tech direct action and online democracy (to name a few).

You can register at: http://turnfront.com/dotactivist

The aim is to go beyond the well-rehearsed conversations about how online campaigning ‘must be done’ and explore exciting new possibilities involving emergent technologies and creative ideas. We’ll also hear about experiences from activists who have deployed some of these ideas in the field and learn from what works and what doesn’t.

Along with the presentations, there will be plenty of time for networking and open conversations so that everyone can share their ideas and experience. The event has been designed to inspire and provoke discussion in equal measure.

Sky Shinning Through

These are serious times at BSkyB. The company has produced stellar results, ones which, ironically, will cost its major shareholder and CEO dear as Murdoch’s NewsCorp aims to buy the 61% of the company it does not own.

The company is still shy of 10m customers, and has had to spend £1.2bn on marketing over the past year.

It just goes to show what a high stakes games broadcasting is.

But BSkyB are making some cleverer moves. They’re putting money into Sky Arts and have even brought back the much lamented Melvyn Bragg arts vehicle, the South Bank Show (which I worked on in my youth). Now they’ve bought the entire back catalogue (or rather, catalog) of HBO, the company responsible for endless hit shows in the States.

They have also, of course, bought Virgin’s orphan channels.

It’s been quite a year for Mr Murdoch Jnr and he is showing all the media genius of his father with these moves.

Meanwhile, any potential threat from network operators (if ever there was a threat) has been nullified by Sky offering free broadband to customers.

MPEGIF MasterClass at IBC 2010

4G

The challenges facing the television/video industry today can be daunting. For many years, competition for subscribers revolved around content, while the network architecture remained relatively stable. More recently, Video on Demand, High Definition, Start Over and other time shifted applications have been widely deployed. This has now been joined by the “TV Everywhere” concept and, of course Over The Top (OTT) Television. In addition 3D is today trying to leap from the theatre into the living room. Every year there is something new to contemplate and for which to potentially plan. Over the years, the MPEG Industry Forum has worked aggressively to bring clarity to the industry’s vision of the future and to advocate for the adoption of standards that accelerate that clarity. This year at IBC this task has become more important than ever as new technologies create new opportunities to make (or lose) money. The 2010 MasterClass at IBC is focused around two areas that will bring technologists and leading executives from operators and content owners around the world to discuss these new opportunities and to share their experience and perspectives.
