Pace adds wi-fi into STB

The UK-based set top box maker is indicating that it will be including wi-fi in its next generation of set top boxes, following a deal will the wi-fi alliance.

In a company announcement, it was said that Pace will be behind the development of this technology within the set top box and connected television sector.

Of course a new Pace wi-fi set top box is nothing new, Apple TV is currently using it and so are some television manufacturers, but the new Pace set top box, will be capable of transferring content by using the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz radio waves through a single super fast connection gateway.

This will work out equal to the 8012.11 a, b, g and n transmissions.

STV staff uncertain about future

The employees of the ITV licence holder in Scotland, STV, are reported as being extremely worried about their future following the government’s decision to scrap the proposed replacement for regional programming and news coverage.

There were plans in place to provide news and regional programming through the Independently Funded News Consortium (IFNC) schemes, which would have received money from the TV Licence.

However, the culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, pulled the plug on the plan in favour of spending the cash on rolling out superfast broadband.

In Scotland, the Scottish News Consortium (SNC) was due to welcome 120 members of staff from STV.

Now that the scheme has gone, the future does not look too good for these workers.

With STV now being held to its public service broadcasting obligations, the future is unclear.

Companies spying on consumers’ online conversations

Some of the largest companies in the UK are being accused of spying on customers’ comments on social networking sites, but is this spying or just good business?

BT was alerted to an issue being experienced by singer Lily Allen.

Following her rants on Twitter, the ex-Tomorrows World presenter Maggie Philbin also used Twitter to inform BT that she was experiencing issues with her email.

The Carphone Warehouse, Lloyds TSB, and EasyJet also use special software that scans social networking sites for negative comments about their services.

However, while companies claim that this is a way of engaging their customers, privacy campaigners claim that these companies are spying on their customers and it is even suggested that any business that contacts a consumer without being invited could be breaking data protection laws.

The sports broadcaster ESPN has agreed terms with the Premiership Rugby League for the exclusive UK broadcast rights to the JP Morgan Asset Management Premiership Rugby 7s.

This is a brand new tournament that will take place during July and August and will include sides from the entire twelve premier league Rugby Clubs.

The teams will be split up into three groups, with the winner and runner up from these mini leagues going through to the knock out stage and then onto the final that will be held on the 6th August.

The coverage of the competition will start at 7.30 pm on the 16th July.

It could prove to be a very exciting concept that is fast paced and fills in a gap in between seasons.

Google switches on background images

You’re probably used to Google morphing its logo into some weird and wonderful piece of art to commemorate the likes of the 117th anniversary of the electric toaster.

But if you visit the UK search engine page this morning, prepare your eyes to be assailed by a far larger piece of artwork.

The entire page background has been switched to, well, it was a picture of some sort of weird wooden construction when we first went to Google this morning. Although it appears to randomly shifting to different images throughout the day.

So no more plain white background, not for the next twenty-four hours, anyway.

The idea is that this is showcasing the new background photo feature Google introduced last week (a feature Bing has long been proud of, leading to cries of copy-catting from many quarters of the net).

The showcase images are drawn from National Geographic, and a number of professional photographer and artist types such as Dale Chihuly, Jeff Koons, Tom Otterness and Polly Apfelbaum.

Yes, Polly Apfelbaum! We know you’re as excited as us but do try to contain yourselves.

In fairness, there are some quite pretty pictures up there. You can select which image you’d like by clicking on the “Curious about today’s homepage?” link.

Users can even add their own image as a background, should they wish. We suggest taking a screenshot of Bing and using that for maximum irony and annoyance factor.

And if you don’t like the whole thing, don’t worry, it will all be gone tomorrow (unless you pick a new default pic for yourself).

To get rid of a background image, click the remove link in the bottom left of the page, although you have to be logged in to your Google account to do this.
