GIPS_Logo2.gifGlobal IP Solution will host a free pre-NAB webcast covering video calling on the TV. The presenter, GIPS’ Vice President Business Development, Larry Golob will discuss the future for service providers to offer video calling on the TV.

The Television is growing into new and expanded places and could function as the PC and telephone. Already Panasonic has announced collaboration with Skype to make voice and video calls. What if you could have that same HD voice and video communication with superior HD voice sound quality and tightly synched video calling capabilities? Imagine the possibilities for content, cable and telcoTV service providers to monetize additional communication services in this way.

Phorm in BT’s side

Phorm is an issue that simply will not leave BT alone.

It has been three or four years since BT and Phorm conducted trials on the internet service provider’s customers’ internet surfing habits, but without their knowledge.

Despite there being a huge anti Phorm campaign by customers and other concerned internet users, investigations by the City of London Police have gone nowhere.

In fact the case is still with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which according to ispreview.co.uk is still assessing the case.

The Phorm issue is not going away for either BT or the government.

In fact, the EU is still pressing the government for details on these secret trials and while Phorm is still around, most of the UK ISP’s are keeping its targeted advertising system at arm’s length.

Virgin Media returns a strong quarter

The cable, broadband and phone provider Virgin Media has announced that it added 34,200 new cable TV subscribers during the last quarter, taking the provider’s total market share to over 3.7 million.

As a content provider Virgin Media Television, which includes Bravo, Challenge, Living and Virgin 1 and owns half of the UKTV group of channels with the BBC, delivered a revenue of £38.2 million, representing an increase of 11.7 per cent.

As far as content goes, Virgin Media is still in talks with BSkyB over the sale of Virgin Media Television and there is still a decision to be made on the fifty per cent share in UKTV.

The BBC has been given the go ahead to buy the shares, but Virgin Media funds this through loans that are estimated to be around £129 million.

STV’s profits fall

The Scottish based broadcaster STV is reporting a fall in revenues for the last year and the company has put these results down to challenging market conditions.

The revenues posted by STV for the year were £110.2 million, which is down 23.7 per cent from the £144.5 million posted in 2008.

The drop in revenues means that the broadcaster’s pre tax profits have also fallen by 54 per cent to £6 million.

STV has been challenged from virtually all sides in the past year with problems arising from changing schedules and removing content provided by ITV, but the broadcaster has noticed a strong start to the year.

The past couple of years have been difficult for STV with the loss of advertising revenues.

STV now needs to find a way of increasing advertising revenues in order to bounce back in 2010.
