One Horse Race

The sun is shining on Sky as they post glowing figures. It seems we’re all staying in and watching HD TV.

Meanwhile, Channel4 has pulled out of bidding for the channels Virgin Media has put up for sale (what was a PBS channel doing bidding for commercial channels anyway ?), leaving BSkyB as the main contender.
UK TV has become a one horse race. Virgin Media is too weak and underpowered to compete whilst ITV is a basket case.
The reluctance of overseas companies to enter the UK market surprises me, but I suspect that there are a number of rational reasons:
- RTL has failed to make much impact with FIVE
- the BBC skews the market
- there is too much competition
- you have to deal with and compete with BSkyB
Murdoch’s tentacles now reach far and wide and he can play off his movie studio against distribution deals around the world.
Frankly, the UK media market excites me, but only when it comes to Internet TV. The cost and barrier to entry are much lower. You can use Google for distribution and the online video advertising market is beginning to take off. This is what the overseas players have realised and why Hulu and other similar service are far more likely to represent their ambitions in the UK market than a full blown assault on the dinosaurs of traditional UK TV. And one of the ultimate owners of Hulu is….Sky’s major shareholder, NewsCorp.

Boo Hoo Yahoo!

So, it’s the beginning of the end for Yahoo! as they sell their soul to Microsoft in a deal which is attractive in the short term, but spells a white flag in the long term.

These are two companies that have singularly failed in the video market, despite consistent attempts. It seems that Ashley Highfield has been busy since joining MSN from BBC as the Microsoft division announces the launch of a new video service.
Ironically, it uses Flash, not Silverlight, the rival technology Microsoft has been touting…
Two wrongs don’t make a right and despite Ballmer’s clever move on this deal, Microsoft’s strategy remains even more incomprehensible than Google’s ‘throw it at the wall and see what sticks’ approach to business.

Wide Area Network

The takeover of Velocix by Alcatel Lucent is a coup for the French-American company; I’ve long been an admirer of the company (disclosure: it was founded by my friend Andi Parker and is a supplier to my company, TV Everywhere), which has developed some unique IP in a ‘me-too’ market with its Metro product.

There’s little doubt that Alcatel will turn it into a B2B player (where is should have been positioned anyway) and will leverage its relationships with the major networks to sell the core technology.
The Velocix CDN business is almost certainly not profitable, but there could be some argument for spinning it out.
Meanwhile, Dan Rayburn has issued a list of the remaining CDN players in the market.
